There are so many beautiful hidden gems to discover iand explore in Doncaster

During lockdown, many of us have ventured out more and discovered new local areas and have come to appreciate the town and surrounding area we live in.

It’s time to celebrate some of the natural wonders from within the Doncaster region and highlight some of the charming landscape we have around us.

Barnburgh Village and Craggs

On the North side of Doncaster lies the pretty village of Barnburgh which is situated in an elevated position with natural countryside surrounding it. From the village there are numerous public footpaths which make it an excellent base for country walks. One trail from

the village has some hidden carvings in the rock face which is lovely for the kids to spot.

Hooton Pagnell and Brodsworth

Hooton Pagnell village is a personal favourite of mine and is simply stunning. It has a backdrop of fantastic countryside and there are many public footpaths from there to its village neighbours Brodsworth which is also home to Brodsworth Hall and Gardens.

Campsall Country Park

Having won the Green Flag Award for parks in 2020, Campsall Country Park has plenty to offer visitors. From its delightful lakes, woodlands and wildflower areas to its picnic areas, play ground with zip wire and spiders web there is something for walkers and families alike.

Sprotbrough Flash and Nature Reserve

Sprotbrough is an outstanding natural beauty which is home to the 17th century Boat Inn which sits alongside the river and is perfect for a pint on a sunny afternoon. This popular spot is just right for a leisurely stroll, pleasant bike ride along the Trans-Pennine track or even a spot of fishing. The stunning waterway is also next to the Sprotbrough Nature

Reserve where you can see some of the local wildlife and birds.

Cantley Park and Sandal Beat

We couldn’t write an article about nature reserves without mentioning our lovely Cantley Park and Sandal Beat Woods. The vast area is perfect for walking and exploring with bikes and Cantley park has an array of activities to keep the kids entertained too.

Cusworth Hall and Country Park

Although the hall isn’t open at present, you can certainly enjoy the breathtaking scenery and parkland which surrounds Cusworth Hall and Museum. We are so lucky to have such a beauty spot in our local area with the beautiful lakes, woodlands, park, open spaces, picnic

areas and playground. After a relaxing stroll, why not enjoy a coffee and cake at one of the cafes too.

Lakeside

For a more contemporary walk, the lakeside is great for a stroll around the 2 mile perimeter and often popular with exercise enthusiasts as it makes a perfect jogging circuit whilst enjoying the view!

Hatfield Moors Nature Reserve

This is a great place for bird watching as there are plenty of hides located around the lakes and reserve. It’s very peaceful and has plenty of walks of varying lengths. A good spot for those wanting to get away from it all and have a bit tranquillity.

One thing to note if you do choose to enjoy these lovely areas please be mindful of others and remember to take your rubbish home with you. They are there for everyone to enjoy!

We could keep going and we haven’t even touched upon Melton Woods, Potteric Carr, Consibrough Castle and The Dell, Bluebell Woods, Tickhill and Wetlands plus many more.

But that’s the beauty of Doncaster, there are so many places to discover and explore.
