Model train event in Doncaster delights thousands

Train enthusiasts from across the country flocked to Doncaster to see on the UK's largest model train exhibitions.

The national model engineering and model exhibition, which is now in its 23rd year, was held at Doncaster Racecourse, Leger Way, for the first time in the events history on Sunday May 21.

The annual event sees individuals, clubs and societies come together to look for the pieces they need to finish their models, as well as showing off their finished pieces and admiring each others.

There are over a thousand models on show at the event, which has come from over 40 clubs and societies as well as individual exhibitors.

Doncaster Model Engineering Society and Doncaster Model Flying Club were among local contributors, but others had travelled from Rotherham, York, Bradford and London. One man had even flown all the way from Pennsylvania, United States specifically for the event.

Exhibition organiser Louis Rex, said: “It was a very, very successful event. The event has been held in Harrogate for the last 22 years and I was a bit worried moving the event by 50 miles would stop people from coming, but it didn’t.

“Thousands of people came and everyone I spoke to said they had a lovely time. Anybody can have an appreciation for trains, from five-year-olds to 90-year olds.

“The racecourse was a superb venue and I have alrady told staff I want to go back at the same time next year.”

Entertainment on offer included radio controlled helicopter flying demonstrations. Boats were also on show.
