An amateur Doncaster theatre group is appealing for talented actors to come forward to star in this year’s panto.

The group behind Doncaster Little Theatre is less than two weeks away from starting rehearsals for this year’s festive performance, Aladdin – but they are yet to cast their leading man.

Director Angela Wren said: “I think part of the issue is that we held our first auditions in July when people were thinking about summer holidays. Now everybody is looking forward to Christmas and panto.”

As well as the lead role of Aladdin, the roles of the Emperor, Vizier, Abanaza and Nasty Niff are still to be cast.

Aladdin must be a singer between the age of 17 and 25 years old.

The Emperor must be somewhere between 40 and 60. This is a comic character role.

Abanaza is the main villan. Actors, in their 40s or 50s, must be able to engage well with the audience.

Vizier is another villan. Actors must be in their 40s or 50s. Nasty Niff is an executioner and actors of any age must double as a mummy.

Angela said: “We are looking for people with experience of performing ideally. It doesn’t have to be professional experience, it can be in a school production. But, experience is not essential.

“I would urge anybody to come along and give it a try. Even if you’re unsure if panto is for you, come and talk to me. To be involved in a panto is such good fun.

“You will only have to audition in front of me and I’m really not that frightening.”

Angela is also looking for people who will work well with the actors she has already cast.

“I like my team to work as a team. We all muck in, including me, to come out with a great show at the end.”

If you are interested in auditioning for any of the roles, please go to the Doncaster Little Theatre open evening on King Street on Monday, November 2 at 7pm. There is no need to book, just turn up.

Audition pieces can be found on the member’s section of the theatre website at

Rehearsals for the show, which will be on stage between December 17 and 31, will start immediately after the November 2 audition.

Rehearsals will be held two or three times a week, in the evening or at the weekend, but not all actors will be required to attend every session. There will be no performance on Christmas Day or Boxing Day.
