The Romans have invaded Doncaster town centre this weekend.
At midday, shoppers were amazed to see an army of men in full Roman dress marching and chanting through the streets.
The army made its way through the Frenchgate shopping centre before settling at the minster for an afternoon of army training with local kids and a gladiator fight ‘to the death’.
The event takes place again tomorrow, with the march at 12 noon, kids’ Roman army activities at 2pm and the gladiator fight at 3pm.
Arabian dancers will provide entertainment and museum staff and archaeologists will be on hand with Roman artefacts found in Doncaster, including some from the recent excavations at Waterdale.
The event is running as part of the St Leger Festival Week 2013.
A pocket-sized festival guide is available at information points across the borough and also online at www.visitdoncaster.com.
