Several Rotherham players will be playing their last game for the club tomorrow at Ealing Trailfinders where the Championship season ends for the Titans after eight long months which have seen them survive the threat of relegation.
Established stars such as full back Sean Scanlon, who is joining South Yorkshire rivals Doncaster Knights along with centre Lloyd Hayes, and forward Barney Maddison, who’s thought to have signed for London Welsh, will leave behind them big holes to fill, not least because they are so experienced.
For instance, Scanlon has made more than 70 appearances for the Titans and Maddison almost 90.
Whatever the result at Ealing, Rotherham will finish the Championship campaign second from bottom, which is a slump compared to the previous two seasons when, coached by Lee Blackett, the Titans finished in the top four and contested the promotion play-offs.
This has been a season to forget, but as long as the lessons are learned, Rotherham under Justin Burnell should be able to recover once he has put together a new squad for the 2016-17 campaign.
Rotherham travel south with a disappointing record of eight wins from 21 Championship matches, 13 of which have been lost.
Titans take on a side that will finish below them in the league but one which will be confident of ending the season with a win, particularly as they are at home, following the good result a week ago when Jersey were beaten by 30-24. Coached by Ben Ward, Ealing seem to have money to recruit and with an eye on next season, they are able to splash out so they can establish themselves in the Championship.
Ward’s team have a worse record than Rotherham’s with five wins in 21 contests and go into tomorrow’s game on 32 points, six fewer than Titans. While other Championship clubs have made public the names of their recruits for next season, such as Doncaster Knights, Rotherham have not, but expect to next week.
Rotherham Titans from: Goodwin, Scanlon, Keating, Owen, Barker, Broadley, Robinson, Carter, White, Williams, Cromie, Harris, Preece, Thiede, Tampin, Edgson, Redfern, Maddison, Birch, Ryan, Sinclair, Argyle.
