Sheffield Eagles are set to welcome back centre Sam Smeaton ahead of Sunday’s showdown with table-toppers Bradford Bulls.

One of the mainstays of the Eagles’ line-up, Smeaton ha to sit out Sunday’s defeat to Halifax through suspension, but is expected to return as Mark Aston’s exiles look to avoid back-to-back league defeats for the first time this season. Smeaton could be joined by winger Rob Worrincy who is fit again after a back problem, with Duane Straugheir likely to move back into the second row. Cory Aston will serve the second of his two match ban following his red card in the recent defeat to Leigh Centurions. “We have Sam back which is great but I thought Duane did a great job for us in the centre at Halifax; it means we can get him back into the forward pack now maybe try and change things a little” Aston said.

“We have to brighten things up,” added Aston. “Hopefully we will have Dave Petersen available to us, he and Rob Worrincy are raring to go, so do they get a nod on Sunday? Possibly. Rob was fit to play last week at Halifax, so he is very much in contention for this weekend.” Aston admits his side need to find some consistency.

“I am looking for a formula which gives us a consistent team,” he said. “We are not consistent within a set of six, and not consistent within 40 and 80 minutes, so we striving at the moment to get a balance to the team to try and bring that consistency.

“It isn’t about on the training ground, it is about what we do in the games now. We have done the work on the training field, but when the lads walk across the whitewash on a Sunday afternoon, and wear the red and gold and have the Sheffield Eagles’ emblem on their left chest, it is about standing up and being counted.”
