Doncaster Phoenix warmed up for their first ever Yorkshire Cup game - against neighbours Wheatley Hills on Saturday - by beating National Two North outfit Sandal in their final pre-season friendly.

The Castle Park club ran out 26-21 winners, with tries from centre Tom Battye, flanker Ed Miles, winger Lee Wallace and scrum-half Oliver Gomes

Phoenix will play in North One East this season - tier six of national rugby - after winning Yorkshire One following an undefeated 2014/15 campaign.

Their victory over Sandal - who operate two leagues higher in the pyramid - bodes well for the forthcoming campaign.

Spokesman Dan Greenslade said: “Perhaps even more pleasing than the result was the fact that the squad had such a young look to it.

“Of the try scorers, Battye is only 19-year-old, Miles was the captain of last year’s Doncaster Colts side, while Gomes – who scored the winning try – is only 17 and was playing his first ever game of senior rugby.

“The 15 players who closed out the final quarter of the game had an average age of only 22, proving that the future is bright for rugby at Castle Park.”

Looking ahead to the new season, Phoenix head coach Ants Posa said: “Our main objective continues to be to strengthen the rugby pathway through Castle Park. As a club we want to build step-by-step. The key is not to look too far ahead but rather focus on each game as it comes.

“North East One is a league I know well having won promotion from it with Beverley several seasons ago,” he added. “Every team will be tough, especially away from home but we’re relishing the challenge.”
