Town miss a chance

ROTHERHAM Town missed their opportunity to return to the top of the table despite victory over Yorkshire Academy after losing to leaders York.

With just one win from their double header, Town must now rely on in-form York dropping points before the end of the season if they are to have any chance of winning the title.

And that never looked likely last Saturday when Rotherham were thoroughly outclassed by York.

Skittled for just 156, main Rotherham contributions came from Gareth Purshouse with 55 and Gurman Randhawa’s 27.

York’s bowlers dominated with Daniel Woods claiming 4-56 and Jake Murphy 3-32 before the batsmen took over, losing just two wickets in their 23 over run to victory.

Town returned to winning ways the next day with a five wicket triumph over Academy to stay four points behind York.

Oliver Jackson claimed 3-39 and Randhawa 3-77 as Rotherham dispatched Town for 228, a score boosted by Jack Leaning’s 85.

In reply, Rotherham reached a winning 229-5 in the 51st over with Ben Sanderson unbeaten on 64 while James Moorhouse scored 45.

On Sunday Rotherham play host to Barnsley who moved up to fifth with a 53 run win over Driffield.

They totalled 218 all out in their innings, with Daniel Rafiq scoring 67 and James Stuart 46.

Driffield got close enough to the total to secure one bonus point, but their innings ended on 165-9 and Barnsley took six points.

Bottom of the table Doncaster Town suffered a five-wicket defeat to Lincolnshire rivals Appleby Frodingham.
