Colton Fretter is backing his Sheffield Steelers’ linemate Mathieu Roy to match his dynamic debut season form in the coming campaign.

Roy was the EIHL Player of the Year in 2014-15 , scoring more goals and points than anybody.

He was a revelation throughout the campaign, but now has the challenge replicating such an impact, under the new coach Paul Thompson.

Fretter said: “Roy is a great player to play with; he is predictable as a line mate which made it easy for guys like Michael Forney (now with Belfast Giants) and I to know where he was on the ice. This helps line chemistry so we all know where each other will be.

“Roy works hard, he got his goals and points by going to the net and battling in the tough areas” said the forward.

Looking ahead to the 2015-6 campaign, he added: “A lot of his success will depend on the line he is with, the scores of the games, and how much he is leaned on for points like last season.

“The amount of points he put up last year will be a tough act to follow, but I know he will work hard while playing the same style of hockey and that is what really matters.

“He will compete hard and play to win, which is more important than matching his point total. If there is a guy that can match those points, its him, and I’m sure he will do everything is his power to improve upon his totals. But he knows the team comes first and that is what is most important to him.”

Fretter says the club will have to compensate for the loss of Forney. “He was a big part of our team, he scored a lot of goals for us last season and those kind of numbers are hard to replace. I do not know a lot of the new guys coming in but from what I’ve heard from the office, these guys will help give us a more balanced attack. So losing a key player hurt, but replacing him with a couple of quality players could prove to be beneficial, we will just have to wait for the season to get going to see how it all plays out.”
