HILL House School had to settle for second place at the Independent Schools Association under 16 national championships in Cheltenham - despite ending the tournament unbeaten.

The majority of the side formed the backbone of last year’s South Yorkshire championships under 14 winning side and were a year younger than most of their rivals.

But that did not stop the Doncaster girls getting off to a splendid start with a 3-1 win over Hull Collegiate School and an 8-0 walloping of Hipperholme Grammer School, including five goals from Clara Petch.

Victory over hosts St Edward’s set up a thrilling finish but nail-biting draws against Stafford Grammar School and eventual champions Claires Court School from Maidenhead, which saw Doncaster Hockey Club’s Saskia Shakesheff in outstanding form in goal, meant Hill House finished the round-robin event in second place.

Peter Shipston, head of hockey at Hill House, said: “This was a marvellous performance from a very talented and dedicated team, most of whom are young enough to be back again next year.”

Hill House are also hoping to qualify for the North of England finals for the third year running.
