WE enjoyed a great day of racing at Doncaster last Saturday.
There was little sunshine, but we had a dry evening so all in all, nice conditions for our Frenchgate Fashion Fiesta Ladies Evening.
As well as great racing action, racegoers were treated to some fantastic entertainment as clothes horses took centre stage for a female focused fashion line up.
On the course, we had a top evening of racing. The opening race of the meeting provided a real surprise, with 25/1 outsider Sedgwick taking the 6:10pm followed by 12/1 Kayaan and 20/1 Bavarian Nordic – that would’ve made for a nice tri-cast!
Those backing an outsider each way in the second race would’ve enjoyed a similar bonus, as 100/1 shot The Black Jacobin snatched third place behind 6/1 winner Reckless Abandon and 11/8 favourite Annunciation.
The other races on the evening were slightly more predictable, though no less exciting – but it was the first two results that perhaps set the tone for the other entertainment racegoers enjoyed.
As well as horse-racing, the screens around the racecourse honed in on the live action from Germany, as Chelsea took on Bayern Munich. I am sure even the most seasoned betting or football fan would have struggled to predict the way the match there turned out!
Ensuring there was at least some predictability to the weekend, 2/7 favourite Frankel delivered another exceptional performance to win the 3:40pm at Newbury on Saturday. Trained by Sir Henry Cecil, the four year old really does seem to be as safe a bet as any at the moment, winning five of its races last year.
The horse, of course, started its great record at Newmarket in August 2010, before impressing here at Town Moor when he won the Frank Whittle Partnership Conditions Stakes during the 2010 St Leger Festival.
We have a quieter few weeks here before our next race evening, which takes place on Friday, June 8. Time to hopefully see more settled weather to keep conditions good for our first June fixture.
