Capable sprinter Whitecrest is worth following in the GEV Handicap at Chepstow.

John Spearing’s seven-year-old mare has been kept busy this summer, but she might not yet be handicapped out of the equation.

There was, after all, a little evidence she can still win off a current mark of 75 at Sandown on Friday when she finished strongly for third place behind El Viento.

Whitecrest was a little flat-footed early doors in that five-furlong handicap, so it was reassuring to see Gary Mahon’s partner flash home once the cause was lost.

Versatile in terms of ground - she has won before in a real ruck at Windsor a few years ago - it is worth remembering the daughter of Ishiguru struck at Brighton in June off just a 3lb lower mark.

Aaron Jones also takes off a handy 5lb in a race that will not take much winning.

With the forecast rather gloomy at Newbury, Firmament looks interesting in the Betfred “Racing’s Biggest Supporter” Handicap.

Jeremy Noseda’s three-year-old is hardly in magnificent nick, but he won over course and distance in soft ground as a juvenile - a piece of form which could be invaluable with this race in mind.

Indeed, the gelded son of Cape Cross perhaps found the terrain too lively at Sandown last time, with his honourable second behind Gerry The Glover in a valuable conditions stakes at Haydock in May a more accurate barometer of his talents.

Starlight Symphony can make sweet music at Brighton.

The five-year-old mare only raced on Saturday, but deserves to be recognised as a major player in the Blueribandbet Exclusive Membership Benefits Fillies’ Handicap.

It is hardly a shock to see her make such a quick turnaround as Starlight Symphony is clearly in decent nick and clearly well handicapped.

The daughter of Oratorio was well fancied in a one-mile handicap at Bath at the weekend and very nearly pulled off a sizeable gamble.
