It started with a six

Division Three

Mexborough 208-6

Coal Aston 2nd XI 206-7

THE flamboyant Zaeim Khalil smashed a six with his first scoring shot and never looked back as he helped Mexborough to their third win of the season against Coal Aston Seconds.

Khalil drilled 69 runs in the main score of Mexborough’s chase to the Coal Aston target.

After Michael Simpson and Simon Mintoft set Aston going with 32 and 26 respectively, the Mexborough attack started to get on top.

Aston moved from 58-1 to 72-4 before Elliott Tye’s 44 and an unbeaten 39 from John Pugh helped them towards a final score of 206-7.

Hugh Tingle and Dunc Hulley gave Mexborough a decent start with 25 and 32 respectively before Khalil entered the fold and ignored appeals for restraint by smashing a six down to Cow Corner.

Support came from Australian Erik Croese who stayed on for the victory on 47no with ten balls and four wickets to spare.

Rockingham 2nd XI 191

Dearne 173-8

A NARROW win over Dearne for Rockingham Seconds ensured they stayed out of the bottom three ahead of Mexborough.

Rockingham hit 98 runs for the first wicket but slumped to 126-6.

Julian Harris hit 42 and skipper Lee Matthew 58 while Andrew Mellor’s late 51 off 28 balls would prove decisive as Rockingham posted 191.

Andy Whaley claimed 3-27 and Jim Prescott 4-30 for Dearne who were looking to Australian star Kyle Humphrys for inspiration in the chase.

But he fell for Rockingham’s Beth Brown for just 39 and the rest of the Dearne side struggled to match the required run rate.

They finished short by 18 runs on 173-8 with Brown snapping up 3-46.
