DONCASTER RACECOURSE: St Leger fever is growing

OUR FIRST August fixture saw a thoroughly entertaining line-up, with eight thrilling races on a plesant day.

With ground good to firm, the driest since the start of the flat season, racing got off to a good start with the 1:40pm claimed by 9/4 Prince of Orange, beating 3/1 Bedazzled and 9/4 favourite Infinite Hope to take the victory.

The seven furlong 2:15pm race will have delivered some lucky punters a strong return, with 11/1 outsider Dance With Dragons sweeping ahead of Blue Nova at 9/2 to win. Those who like to bet each way, and with the luck on their side, would have been delighted with third-placed horse, Secular Society, a surprise at 25/1.

In the third race, another outsider had a great run to finish third. Code Six at odds of 20/1 galloped in just behind Drift and Dream, favourite at 9/2, and Willbeme at 7/1, again, no doubt leaving a number of punters happy.

The 3:20pm delivered a more predictable finish, with Artistic Jewel (6/1) winning by beating off competition from 5/1 Royal Rock and 9/4F Boomerang Bob. And, in the fifth – the biggest race of the day - Silvery Moon at 8/1 romped home ahead of 9/2 favourite Conduct and 17/2 Suits Me.

In a three-way battle, Al Saham at 7/2 beat off Require and Flashman, both at the same price, in our sixth race of the day. The penultimate was one for the outsiders, with Blazing Speed living up to his name to win the race at odds of 12/1, ahead of 20/1 Starfield and Ustura at 16/1 – that’s the kind of race in which a reverse forecast would have delivered a tidy sum.

The last of our line ups, a five furlong race, was claimed by Roy’s Legacy. A strong finish saw the horse hang on to pass the post ahead of Dartrix at 12/1 and favourite Just Like Heaven.

With another great day of racing behind us, we have only one meeting ahead before the Ladbrokes St Leger. Though it’s a little over a month away, our attention has already turned to the four-day highlight, the biggest in our calendar with more than 60,000 racegoers expected to descend on Town Moor. It should be quite an occasion.
