Dawson delivers brilliant recovery at Lakeside

Brian Dawson insists he will never allow himself to give in after recovering from 2-0 down to reach the second round of the BDO World Darts Championship.

The Thurnscoe thrower beat Yorkshire team mate and former world champion John ‘Boy’ Walton 3-2 in a dramatic clash at Lakeside.

And he says there was never any chance of allowing a Walton whitewash.

“All I know is that I came off that stage at 2-0 down and I’m not allowed to give up,” he said. “I’m not the best player in the world but I’ll dig in more than anybody in this game.

“He was 2-0 up but it’s the first to three, not two.

“So I just thought, I’ll have the next three, it’s as simple as that.

“I’m absolutely ecstatic.

“It feels like I’ve been on that stage for ten or 12 hours.

“What a player John Boy Walton is.”

Dawson survived two match darts to progress.

Walton had the chance to secure victory but Dawson produced a series of fantastic finishes under pressure to reach the last 16.

The break came at the ideal moment for the Thurscoe courier, and resuming 2-0 down, he immediately broke Walton’s throw with a fine 124 checkout before winning the third set without reply.

Walton surged ahead however in the fourth set but missed two darts at tops for the match and Dawson refused to be beaten, keeping his nerve to level up the match.

Both men handled the pressure well but Dawson was in the ascendency and roared through the final leg for the win.

Dawson booked a second round match with Canadian number one Jeff Smith, scheduled to be the final game of the Wednesday evening session.
