Even indoor cricket can be beaten by the weather – but Rotherham Town are determined to use their new training base on Thursday night for their first session of the winter.

Last week the club postponed training because of snow around the Rotherham Football Centre in Eastwood Industrial Estate.

But player and junior coach Jonny Allan says there will definitely be a warm welcome for all members of the club tonight: “It will be great to have a base and a regular time to train, over the last few years the seniors especially have led a nomadic existence and as such numbers have not always been great.

“It will also help our junior players as they will have role models around throughout the year and our first 11 can really get involved with the development of the next generation of ‘Builders’!

“We will be announcing details of our successful Sportivate bid in the next few weeks too which will enable us to run girls only cricket sessions around Rotherham thanks to Sport England, South Yorkshire Sport and the Yorkshire Cricket Board.”

The club has also used Thrybergh school in the past for winter training but has decided to use the Football Centre until returning to Clifton Lane in the spring for outdoor practice on the pitch and in the nets.

Bilal Nazir, the centre manager, said: “We have just opened our state of the art indoor cricket facility with four indoor cricket lanes.

“It is something the town desperately needed and hopefully we can have budding cricketers of all abilities using this facility.

“We are delighted to have linked up with the town’s biggest cricket club, and for them to use the centre for all their indoor training.”
