Ben claims the Lyons’ share in Sprotbrough rout


BEN Lyons and Tom Kaye shared a 180-run stand as Pontefract and District Cricket League Division Two promotion contenders Sprotbrough piled up the division’s highest total this season against Thurnscoe Institute.

Lyons hammered 120 and Kaye 89 as Sprotbrough posted a formidable 328-5 that also included 41 by Adam Fairclough and 36 from Callum Honeyman. In reply, Steve Honeyman junior (6-60) toppled Thurnscoe for 168.

Barnby Dun were skittled for 91 in a six-wicket defeat against Whitley Bridge. Scott Walker (29) was Barnby’s top scorer and Mark Nurse (2-14) their best bowler.

A battling 40 by Gareth Williams was in vain for Askern who were routed for 90, replying to Hooton Pagnell’s 269-5 that featured an unbeaten 133 by Charlie Kaye. Andy Cutts (44) and Chris Stothard (41) guided Hatfield Town to 148-7 at Yorkshire Main whose reply had barely got underway at 1-0 when the match was abandoned because of rain. Fishlake lost by 116 runs at Division One leaders Fairburn in a 36-over match. Josh Denby (46) led Fishlake’s scoring as they fell for 173, chasing Fairburn’s 289-2.

Brothers Carl and Mark Walton were outstanding in Thorne Colliery’s win over Division Three’s bottom team Sykehouse. Carl claimed 5-28 and Mark 4-52 as Sykehouse were bowled out for 125, despite an unbeaten 54 by Phil Sanders and 24 from Chris Marshall.

Matthew Cockburn (31), Kerry Bissell (25), James Stewart (22no) and Mark Walton (21no) led the way as Thorne knocked off the runs.

Division Four promotion-chasers Brodsworth Main trounced Fishlake A by 279 runs. Paul Tagg (149) and Mason Warren (62no) guided second-placed Brodsworth to 326-5 and Adrian Price snapped up 8-24 to rout Fishlake for 47. Bullcroft Main were dismissed for 108 in a 92-run defeat at Ferrybridge Power Station. Barnby Dun A beat Whitley Bridge A by 14 runs in their Division Five clash, but Sprotbrough A lost by seven wickets at Thurnscoe A. Hatfield A maintained their Division Six promotion bid with a four-wicket victory against bottom side West Bretton A. Division Seven strugglers Askern A recorded only their second league win when all-rounder Ross Firth (46 and 4-7) gave them the edge against Pollington. Fenwick’s Vic Morton (8-37) produced an outstanding bowling performance in a 176-run run win against Ferrybridge Power Station A who were routed for 60. Peglers A coasted to a 10-wicket win against Bentley A (19) - Stephen Forster senior (4-8) and Stephen Forster junior (4-4).
