Doncaster-born Rob Marsden has been rewarded for his performances in the BBL with Manchester Giants with a place in the England squad.
The 25-year-old was yesterday named in coach Paul James’ 15-man squad to face an Ireland Select team at the NIA in Birmingham next month.
Marsden, who grew up playing for Danum Eagles, has previously played EBL1 basketball for Sheffield and Leeds.
The 6’7” forward has also represented Great Britain under-20s and enjoyed a successful US college career with Findlay College before returning to the UK.
He is currently 16th in this season’s BBL total points chart with 202 points to his credit.
England Select against Ireland Select will be part of the BBL’s Cup Final Day on January 12 and will tip off at 12pm.
Marsden will see his selection as a great opportunity to impress at international level with GB summer selection in mind.
Coach James said: “It should be a lot of fun, these games always are.
“They get intense but are always played in great spirit.
“It will be a challenge as the preparation time is very limited but as long as it throws up some all-star style highlights then it’s a good spectacle for the basketball fan.”
Marsden is one of several top players from Doncaster that may eventually be tempted to return home to play the game.
His former club Eagles will join the National League next season, starting in Division Four, and are aiming to reach the BBL within five years.
