Doncaster try to keep hold of possession against Sheffield Eagles

SHEFFIELD Eagles moved up to second in the Championship after their South Yorkshire derby victory over Doncaster.

Eagles were never allowed to dominate by a Dons team that held the lead for much of the first half before being hit for two tries soon after the restart. Doncaster never stopped competing but had to settle for a bonus point as their losing run was stretched to five games.

Eagles gave a debut to forward Dario Esposito, signed from Dewsbury earlier this month while the Dons included prop Adam Scott from Batley and on loan Huddersfield winger Ben Blakemore.

Winger Scott Turner got Eagles off to a flying start but Doncaster replied through former Eagles hooker Kyle Kesik, who forced his way over from dummy half. Stewart Sanderson added the goal to put Dons ahead.

A string of penalties handed possession to the Eagles and centre Tom Armstrong’s break sent in winger Misi Taulapapa with Dominic Brambani adding the goal.

Kesik was again instrumental in Dons response with a flat pass for second rower Chris Spurr to force his way in. Sanderson added the goal. Confusion and a fumble on the line helped Sanderson nip in for a try but the centre’s attempted conversion his an upright.

Eagles drew level with Taulapapa taking Brambani’s chip kick to step inside and score. Brambani added the goal.

With two minutes to half-time, Adam Scott was sin binned and Eagles made the extra man count after the re-start with Matt Garside putting them in front with Brambani adding the goal.

Armstrong then touched down a long Brambani kick.

But after a Taulapapa fumble, Brooke Broughton cut the Eagles lead.

Full-back Quentin Laulu-Togagae took Menzie Yere’s offload to squeeze in and re-assert Eagles authority. Brambani added the goal.

Late on, Eagles Ben Gledhill was sin binned and Dons Danny Cowling went in for a converted try.
