Creating clear-cut chances is top of Rob Jones’ agenda as he begins his first full week in charge of Rovers on a caretaker basis.

Jones took the reigns temporarily last week after Paul Dickov was sacked as manager.

And he admits he is looking forward to having a full week to focus on working with the players after having just day days to prepare for the trip to Walsall.

While largely pleased with the performance in the 2-0 defeat at the Bescot Stadium, Jones says not enough clear-cut chances were created.

“I can take an awful lot of positives from the game,” Jones said. “They scored the first goal in the 86th minute.

“We created opportunities, we created chances.

“It’s up to me now to make sure we create clear-cut chances and put those clear-cut chances away.

“It’s important now that the boys keep going, which they will.

“I’ll be positive. We go again. I’ve got a great dressing room.”

The main positive Jones took from the game was the work rate of his players.

Walsall had the majority of the possession but failed to create many gilt-edged opportunities of their own until Tom Bradshaw’s late double, as Rovers defended resolutely.

And given the turbulence of the week, Jones was pleased with the commitment of his players.

He said: “On paper it’s a 2-0 defeat but looking on reflection it’s not a 2-0 defeat.

“It was a mistake for the first goal and for the second goal the boy is offside.

“It’s the first one at the back end of a strange week for all of us.

“The boys were magnificent Thursday, Friday and Saturday. They’ve given me everything they had.

“Their keeper got man of the match, he made four or five fantastic saves. If one of those goes in it changes the reflection of the game.

“I’m proud of them because they kept going right to the end.

“There’s things I’ve got to look at, there’s things I need to work on but I’ve got a full week now.

“I’ll reflect on Saturday over the weekend and we’ll go again Monday.”
