Nigel Adkins last night warned Sheffield United will be making a grave mistake if they under-estimate the ferocity of this season’s race for the Championship.

Adkins delivered his assessment after Jim Phipps, United’s co-chairman, insisted “the board, the management, the players and the fans” must “step it up” to achieve a top two finish.

“Since I joining, I’ve been consistent in what I’ve said about the division,” Adkins, who has led both Southampton and Scunthorpe to promotion, told The Star. “And I’m speaking from experience.

“The expectations from us is that we win every game, we need to embrace that. But you can’t just expect to walk out and win a game of football. I know, I’ve experienced it. I’ve got three promotions from this league, twice with an underdog, and if you lower your guard, you get caught.”

Adkins, whose side are sixth ahead of tomorrow’s game at Crewe Alexandra, added: “The players are well-versed in that and so are we as staff. When you look at the league, everybody is beating everyone else at the moment, every game is competitive and nobody is walking away with it. That’s the state of play at the moment but we fully expect to get stronger and more consistent as the season goes on. We know what the demands are and, like I say, we know from experience.”
