Sheffield United have banked nearly £2m, The Star understands, following the sale of Jamie Murphy.

The former Scotland under-21 international joined Brighton and Hove Albion for an undisclosed sum yesterday after expressing a desire to hold talks with the Championship club.

Although the fee Albion paid to secure Murphy’s services is officially undisclosed, sources close to both Bramall Lane and The AMEX Stadium last night confirmed it is around £250,000 above the £1.5m reported in some quarters.

The money represents a seven fold increase on the sum United paid to acquire the 25-year-old from Motherwell midway through the 2012/13 season.

Acknowledging the player had effectively instigated the move by requesting permission to speak with Albion, United’s managing director Mal Brannigan said: “The club had received several offers over the past month and had rejected them all in the interests of retaining the player’s services.

“Once Jamie expressed a strong desire to talk with Brighton and made his wishes known to both the board and the manager, the club reluctantly accepted Brighton’s offer for Jamie’s registration.”

As this newspaper reported two months ago, Nigel Adkins’ predecessor Nigel Clough had drafted plans to sell Murphy during the transfer window after deciding Che Adams’ rapid progress since arriving from Ilkeston last year meant the finance raised could be reinvested elsewhere.

Adkins, who took charge in June, took a subtly different view. But, after being informed of Murphy’s wish ahead of today’s meeting with Chesterfield, accepted he was set to depart with Adams or Martyn Woolford likely to fill the void against the visitors from Derbyshire.

Murphy made over 100 appearances for United but said: “One of the big reasons I felt like making the move (is because) I want to try to get in my national team.”
