Sheffield United are set to disappoint suitors of Che Adams by agreeing a new contract with the teenage sensation later this month, writes James Shield.

The Star can reveal that talks between Adams, one of the most coveted young talents in the Football League, and Bramall Lane’s board of directors have reached an advanced stage with manager Nigel Adkins last night suggesting an announcement is imminent.

“There are on-going talks, that’s where we are, and I wouldn’t be surprised if those are close to fruition,” Adkins said. “That might materialise.

“The process is taking place but (the coaching staff) don’t get too involved in that because it’s someone else’s area of expertise. But, yes, we’ve been asked the question and that’s something we think is going to happen.”

Sunderland, Leicester City and Newcastle were among the clubs to express an interest in Adams before his move to United from Ilkeston last season while Cardiff City are known to have monitored his progress in recent months.

Adams burst onto the scene by scoring twice during United’s Capital One Cup semi-final against Tottenham Hotspur in January and could feature among the squad which visits Fulham in the second round of this season’s competition tonight.

Adkins hopes to bolster the options at his disposal before the forthcoming transfer deadline but said: “It’s important never to overlook the players we already have here. We have an excellent coaching staff in Andy Crosby and Dean Wilkins and we want those here now to improve as well.”
