Rotherham United began their run of pre-season friendlies with a comfortable win against Parkgate.

The fixture was moved forward in order for the players and fans to enjoy England’s World Cup quarter-final win.

Manager Paul Warne named two entirely different teams for each half as he eased his squad back into things.

The trio of summer signings - Zak Vyner, Clark Robertson and Kyle Vassell - all played in the first half, alongside re-signed goalkeeper Lewis Price.

After five minutes Vassell fired an effort at goal with Michael Smith on hand to give the Millers an early advantage from the rebound.

Minutes later Joe Newell was denied by a decent save after breaking into the box.

New recruit Vassell thought life in a Millers shirt had begun with a goal, only for his effort to be ruled out after a foul on the keeper.

Rotherham piled on the pressure with the defence having very little to do all afternoon.

After the break, youngster Joshua Kayode, who is eager to impress Warne to stake his claim for the upcoming season, hit a powerful effort wide before rattling the post.

Moments after being denied by the woodwork Anthony Forde struck the bar.

Forde wasn’t to be kept out, however, as he curled home with his left foot from 25 yards out.

Mack Collinson got one back for the local side with an unstoppable free-kick.

Forde grabbed a second late on with a poacher’s finish at the back post.

Meanwhile, the squad flew out to Austria for their pre-season tour today.

Warne has an intensive week-long camp in store for the players, consisting of the famed 7am hill climbs which contributed to last season’s League One promotion success.

The squad will face two local sides during their gruelling week at the Lindabrunn.

First half: Price, Vyner, Ajayi, Robertson, Purrington, Taylor, Vaulks, Wiles, Newell, Vassell, Smith.

Second half: Bilboe, Dom Ball, Ihiekwe, Mattock, Hinds, Forde, Palmer, Williams, McGinley, Yates, Kayode.
