Last season he shone for Rotherham United in six starts.

Now Emmanuel Ledesma has the chance to do it for a full Championship campaign after the Millers fought off reported interest from both Sheffield clubs to land the right winger on a permanent basis.

Yesterday’s signing brought to an end a long chase for Rotherham boss Steve Evans who wanted to snap up the Middlesbrough attacker last January at the end of his sparkling December loan spell only to see the Millers’ bid rejected by the North-east outfit.

Evans said: “It goes without saying that I am delighted to bring someone with the ability of Manu back to the Millers.

“Every Rotherham United fan will be delighted that this young man has joined us on a permanent basis as they have, like me, watched many outstanding performances when he was on loan with us last season.

“We as a football club tried as hard as we could to convince Manu’s parent club to do a permanent transfer last season but sadly they couldn’t sanction one at the time. Our perseverance has paid off.”

The Millers manager hinted that Sheffield Wednesday had wanted the 27-year-old, while United were also thought to be admirers

He added: “I got home with a huge smile on my face having secured Manu’s signature in the knowledge that there was significant interest from some of our local rivals in the Championship.”

Ledesma said: “I can’t wait to play here. I know the players, I know the fans, I know everything, I know the coach. I am so happy to come back here.

“It was special just being here for one month. I am looking forward to the start of the season. I want to play for the fans. When I was here, they were so happy when I played and that made me feel good on the pitch.”

Ledesma - who, The Star understands, has signed a 12-month deal with an option to extend - is the Millers’ fourth summer capture after Lewis Buxton, Joe Mattock and Aidy White, and Evans’ recruitment mission is far from over, with another new face possibly arriving as soon as today.

Danny Collins has been linked with a move to AESSEAL New York Stadium. The centre-half, aged 34, played for Nottingham Forest last season but the Welsh international has spent much of his career in the Premier League, with Sunderland and Stoke City.

Argentine Ledesma flew into England yesterday to seal the deal and will train with his new teammates today.

“It was a long flight, about 16 hours,” he said. “Now it’s to the hotel to rest, a good sleep, then I am ready!”
