Rotherham United: Millers closing on signing No 2, says Barker

Rotherham United’s push to bring in new players is poised to pick up speed, assistant boss Richie Barker has predicted.

So far, the Millers have made just one summer signing, snapping up centre-half Michael Ihiekwe as his contract was coming to an end at National League Tranmere Rovers.

But Barker, preparing for life in League One with manager Paul Warne following the club’s Championship relegation, says there could be a second arrival within a matter of days.

“We are getting closer with a number of people,” he said. “A lot of players are still on holiday and I don’t think anything has really hotted up in the market.

“Hopefully in the next week or so we can get at least one in.”

Warne, who concludes his UEFA A licence coaching course in Ireland next Wednesday, had hoped to do more business last month.

Barker added: “It is still early. In an ideal world, you want to get everyone over the line by the middle of May and clock off for a couple of weeks, go on holiday knowing it’s all done.

“But, realistically, that is never going to be the case. Have a look ... I haven’t seen that many people sign for clubs. That is for a multitude of reasons: players’ contracts haven’t even expired, for a start, and the play-offs have only just finished. That cascades on to other clubs.”

Rotherham have made three new strikers, a goalscoring midfielder and another central defender their priority targets.

Warne spoke of his interest last month in former Millers midfield man Ben Pringle, who is out of favour at Preston North End.

But Barker said: “As far as I know, nothing has developed.

“He is someone we are all a big fan of. I don’t know him, but I know how highly people think of him, and I have played against him and know how good he is.

“He is someone who we all think about, but nothing has moved on that.”
