Rotherham United kicked off their pre-season tour of Poland with a 2-1 victory over Polish second tier side Miedz Legnica.
Alan Stubbs’ men had to come from behind to maintain their winning start to pre-season with second-half goals from Jerry Yates and Richie Smallwood following Legnica’s opener just past the half-hour mark.
The Millers fielded four trialists looking to earn themselves contracts, while manager Stubbs also confirmed that the possibility remains of adding to his squad before the end of the tour on Sunday.
While negotiations with players back home are believed to be at an advanced stage, a number of the current crop set out to show the new boss what they can do in the muggy conditions at Rotherham’s Hotel Remes headquarters.
After going behind during a sedate opening 45 minutes, the Millers upped the tempo in the second half.
On 54 minutes, Yates picked up a ball on the edge of the penalty area before being upended in the box, leaving the referee no option but to point to the spot. Yates picked himself up to calmly slot the ball into the bottom right corner to level the scores.
With 15 minutes remaining, Rotherham’s pressure paid off and they took the lead with a well-taken strike.
Richie Smallwood, one of six substitutes to be introduced during the second half, met a low cut-back from the right before expertly guiding the ball into the top corner from just inside the area.
The Millers saw out the last 15 minutes with little fuss.
Stubbs said he erred on the side of caution with some of his players who had picked up minor knocks. They are expected to be included in Friday’s game against Gornik Zabrze.
