Five weeks ago Steve Evans was on the verge of letting striker Jonson Clarke-Harris go.
Now the Rotherham United boss wouldn’t even contemplate allowing his in-form forward to join another club.
Clarke-Harris turned in another impressive display last weekend in the win over Cardiff City and is a likely starter on Saturday when the Millers travel to Birmingham City.
His manager said: “I know from looking at Jonson what kind of frame he’s in. And when he’s in the frame of mind he’s been in since he got back in the side, he’s as good as many in the Championship.
“And he’ll not get the credit because he’s at little Rotherham, isn’t he? If I was a club in this league with big rescources, I’d been looking at him. But you’re not going to get him. It’s just a comment rather than what’s going to happen.”
Thge 21-year-old wasn’t even part of the matchday squad at the start of the Championship campaign, but made a big impact as a substitute in the third match, against Preston, and has featured in every match since.
Evans called on him to improve his attitude and consistency and since then he has scored three goals in six games, while his pace and power have troubled every side he has faced.
“You wouldn’t want to play against Jonno,” Evans said,
Meanwhile, Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe, who scored a penalty in the 2-1 triumph over Cardiff, spoke of the relief in the Millers set-up after they had recorded their first Championship victory of the season.
“It was very important for the team,” he said. “We have done okay in the last couple of weeks but it stayed in our minds that we didn’t have a win.
“Everybody was focused and everybody in the stands could see that we were going for the win.”
Centre-half Richard Wood, who hasn’t played this season, has joined Fleetwood Town on a month’s loan.
Rotherham have made their Tuesday-night home clash against Reading on October 20 a ‘Friends for a Fiver’ game.
Season-ticket-holders can buy an extra ticket for £5, with Millers commercial director Steve Coakley saying: “These designated fixtures have proven extremely popular in the past and we are pleased to be able to offer tickets to our fans at affordable prices.”
