Hallam had to settle for a goalless draw at lowly Rossington Main in the Toolstation Northern Counties East League.
But both managers will take some satisfaction with Ryan Hindley’s men remaining unbeaten in 13 away league games this season, while his opposite number Lee Holmes saw his team end a run of four defeats.
In the first five minutes Hallam’s Michael Blythen put a dangerous ball across the six yard box but three incoming players just failed to get the vital touch. Then Simon Mirfin tried his luck from distance but the home keeper Ricard Watson was right behind the ball.
Rossington threatened with Liam Cooper seeing his far post header drop just wide and just before the break Jason Stokes put a fine ball across the Hallam goal that just evaded Lee Holmes.
The home side went even closer as Ben Clark’s effort came back off the post. Hallam finished strongly with Curtis Modest’s seeing his header saved at the foot of the post by Watson then Blythen put an effort straight at the keeper.
Penistone Church suffered their first defeat in six games, a 3-2 home defeat to promotion rivals AFC Mansfield.
Church recovered from a Craig Mitchell goal to lead 2-1 early in the second half with two goals in quick succession. Ashley Ellis equalised then Oliver Fearon edged them in front with his 10th of the season.

There was just two local games in the Premier Division. Maltby Main were beaten 4-0 at Nostell MW as the hosts made up for a 6-0 drubbing in the reverse fixture at Muglet Lane in September.
Retford United went down 5-1 at promotion chasing Cleethorpes Town. Bradley Johnston had given the Badgers hope of pulling off a shock with an equaliser three minutes before the break cancelling out the home side’s 17th minute opener.
