Barnsley have made their first signing of the summer in the form of St Mirren’s Stevie Mallan.

As reported earlier this week in The Star, the Reds expected to get the deal done before the end of the week. And the club formally announced an agreement was in place to sign Mallan this afternoon, after their bid was accepted early this week.

The fee is believed to be in the region of £300,000 and the deal will formally go through once the transfer window opens on July 1.

Mallan passed his medical on Monday and has agreed a three-year deal at Oakwell.

“I am very excited to take the next step in my career,” said Mallan, who scored 29 goals for the Paisley club.

“Something I always wanted to do was come down to England to try and make myself better.

“I definitely feel Barnsley is the right choice and I am very impressed with the set up here. It seems like a great town and I’m excited to come down and work here.”

It was revealed that the offer almost did not make it to the Scottish Championship club as Barnsley made a comical bidding faux pas.

The initial offer was sent to the club’s fan site, with the editor graciously passing it on to the relevant parties. Heckingbottom has not shied away from the fact that he needs to bolster his squad.

He would prefer to get the majority of his business done early to give himself the best possible chance of getting the incoming players up to speed before the new season starts.

And the Reds have moved fast to capture the Scottish 21-year-old.

Mallan will add some much-needed creativity to the Reds’ midfield after the departures of Conor Hourihane and Marley Watkins over the past few months.

The highly-rated Scot scored six goals in his last nine games to keep the Buddies up and is an exciting prospect for the Reds.

Meanwhile, the Reds have confirmed pre-season friendlies against AFC Guiseley, Grimsby Town, Coventry City and Rochdale.
