A successful junior football club has ambitions to increase participation for Dearne Valley youngsters.
Denaby United JFC currently boast four age groups which include the under-fives, sixes, sevens and under-16s.
But the club wants to keep growing to go along with the demand to play football within the Dearne Valley area which includes a ‘mini soccer’ development programme.
“As a junior club we want to be able to have the chance of offering football for every age group from the under-fives right the way through to the under-17s where they can progress through to Denaby United’s under-21s and first team,” said under-sevens coach Chris Wosman.
“Football is very popular in the Dearne Valley. I set up last season’s under-sixes purely so my son had a team and after just two weeks of training, we had 26 children aged four and five turn out.
“We then put an advert out for a coach for the under-fives age group and within days we had a volunteer. After completing his coaching qualifications, Daniel Finbow opened up last season’s under-fives.
“This season, another parent coach Steve Ellor - who plays for Denaby’s first team - has stepped up to run the 2014/15 under-fives.
“We have a great team of volunteers and parents who assist with the running of the club of which there are too many to name,” said Wosman.
“I believe we have the best supporters in junior football but then again I may be slightly biased!”
Wosman, who set-up the mini football programme with the help of club volunteer Amanda Hale, also told The Times that these sessions have helped increase children’s self-esteem.
“At Denaby United JFC we believe that all you need to start your football journey are a willingness to learn and that you have fun whilst playing,” he said.
“We’ve found that the benefits to a child’s confidence, respect and all-round social skills improve quickly from being part of a team.
“We measure success not in matches and trophies but by the enjoyment the children have playing and the development of each and every player at the club. Our motto is ‘every child matters’.”
The junior club are based at Old Road in Conisbrough and have secured several sponsorship deals with local businesses. Volunteers also raise funds through a variety of events.
