s Barnsley are off and running for the 2014-15 season after they dramatically came from behind to beat Crewe at Gresty Road.

The Reds made an encouraging start to their first away fixture of the season.

The Reds struggled again the first half as they rarely looked like breaking this term’s scoring duck, but Leroy Lita and Martin Cranie replied to Billy Waters’ opener as the visitors bossed the latter stages.

The travelling Reds’ faithful were in terrific voice at the final whistle now that their team finally have lift-off following two blanks in their opening two fixtures.

The victory now sets up Wilson’s men perfectly for the forthcoming midweek trip to Coventry.

After a dismal first half during which Crewe teenager Waters’ volleyed strike was the undoubted highlight, the tempo did lift soon after the restart.

Sam Winnall saw a shot blocked by Crewe defender George Ray, while James Bailey fired in a well-directed strike which Scott Shearer was perfectly-placed to save.

Bradden Inman came close to a second for the hosts, but the Reds grabbed the equaliser they deserved in the 56th minute.

Winnall drilled a low shot across goal from the right, and with Shearer missing the ball as it fizzed across his six-yard line, there was Lita lurking at the far post and he tapped into an unguarded net from close range.

Lita came close to his own spectacular goal 21 minutes from time, this time firing inches wide from a scissor-kick following Winnall’s headed knock-down.

The Reds’ tails were most definitely up and they scored again in the 75th minute.

This time the goal came from an unlikely source in skipper Cranie, who nodded into the roof of the net after Lewin Nyatanga’s prodded ball into the danger zone.

Matt Tootle came closest to a Crewe leveller late on, but in the end this was to be Barnsley’s daCrewe (4-5-1): Shearer, Tootle, Ray, Dugdale,Leigh, Waters, Turton, Grant, Ness, Inman, Oliver, Subs: 13 Garratt, 3 Guthrie, 8 Atkinson, 14 Saunders, 18 Nolan, 21 Molyneux, 25 Haber
