‘Fresh’ Doncaster Rovers ready for MK Dons test

Rovers battled out a 1-1 draw with Russell Martin’s side on the opening day of the season, with the visitors to the Keepmoat dominating attacking play on the day.

And Butler says his players are well aware of how Milton Keynes can take control of the game.

“I thought they were very good on the opening day of the season,” he said. “They had a bad run of form but they’ve picked up as of late.

“I think the manager has done an excellent job there.

“There were questions over whether he should have changed the style but he’s stuck with it and its paid dividends especially in the industry we are in. The club has stayed strong and allowed him to implement the style.

“They are a very tough team and full credit to him for the job he’s done.

“Watching their style of football is really pleasing on the eye. Full credit to them.

“But it’s about how we approach the game and how we can exploit them in areas we feel we can hurt them.

“We give them plenty of credit but we also back ourselves.”

Without a midweek game this week, Butler has enjoyed his first opportunity since taking charge of Rovers to have multiple days on the training ground with his players.

And he has sensed an extra freshness in his players over the last few days.

“I think it’s come at a good stage where we can have some thought process and clarity on what is happening and what will happen in the rest of the season,” he said.

“The players have trained really well this week and there has been a good atmosphere.

“We went through some shape work and the players looked fresh, bright and full of running.

“I think this time off has served us well because it’s given us time to reflect. It’s the same for the staff because it’s given us all chance to see where we’re going.

“It’s been nice to plan sessions and get them across.”
