Paul Dickov’s defensive headache is unlikely to ease in time for Sunday’s visit of manager-less Millwall, with Bongani Khumalo a major doubt to face the Lions.
The South African defender has been ordered to rest after twisting his knee in the 3-1 defeat at Derby County last weekend.
Dickov is in desperate need of some experience at the back after teenage pairing Liam McCullough and Liam Wakefield were given the run around in the Boxing Day defeat to Ipswich.
However, tomorrow’s game is likely to come too soon for Khumalo, although Dickov will give the on-loan Tottenham centre back until the last minute to prove his fitness.
Dickov could turn to on loan Aston Villa defender Enda Stevens to fill in at centre back, or may consider moving Paul Quinn inside to centre back and asking Wakefield to play right back.
Chris Brown (hamstring) and James Coppinger (heel) are thought to be the two players closest to recovering in time for this weekend.
Rob Jones, James Husband, Jamie McCombe, Reece Wabara, Paul Keegan and Billy Paynter are all still sidelined through injury.
