Doncaster Rovers: I’d have left any other club admits frustrated Wellens

Richie Wellens admits he would have left any other club than Rovers following the uncertainty over his future following his return.

The midfielder penned a deal until January in Rovers’ only piece of business on transfer deadline day.

And he revealed his patience has been tested since rejoining the club on non-contract terms at the start of last month.

“To be honest I’ve not been happy with the way things have been over the last our weeks because what was offered to me hasn’t come to fruition,” Wellens said.

“I’ve been on non-contract terms where both parties could cancel the deal at any time.

“It’s been difficult over the last four or five games because being on that basis, I’ve know if I were to get injured I’d be stuffed.

“I’ve been sort of half playing trying to protect myself as well as trying to give 100 per cent in games.

“If it was any other club apart from Doncaster I probably would have left.

“But I’ve worked for John Ryan in the past, he’s a top guy and I’ve got a lot of respect for him.

“Paul Dickov is someone I’ve worked with as well and I think he’s got a very bright future in the game.

“He can go on to bigger and better things if he does well here and I want to be a part of what he’s got planned over the next couple of years.”

Wellens insists he never had any intention of leaving the Keepmoat – despite speculation last week linking him with other clubs including Bristol City – and he wants to stay well beyond the end of his deal on January 1.

But he revealed he was forced to cancel his contract following Saturday’s defeat to Bournemouth in order to safeguard his future.

The 33-year-old said: “I had to cancel my contract to give me Sunday and Monday so if the deal didn’t happen I could go elsewhere.

“I never had any intention of going anywhere else.

“If the takeover or whatever happens before the end of my contract then I would sign a longer deal.

“All I can do now is play my best until January and hopefully something which is out of my hands can get sorted.

“This is a club I hope I can spend the next couple of years with.”
