Doncaster Rovers: How is Richie Wellens still here asks Dickov

Paul Dickov admits he is surprised that no one has made a move to sign Richie Wellens so far this month.

But the Rovers boss also revealed he would be delighted to still have the midfield ace’s services at the end of August.

Wellens will not be considered for selection by Rovers until after the closing of the transfer window – should be remain at the club beyond September 1.

The reason for that is the relegation release clause in his contract which will allow him to leave the club for free at any point before the window shuts.

Paul Quinn – who was in the same position as Wellens – departed yesterday after agreeing to cancel his contract at the club.

And Dickov says he did not expect Wellens to still be at the club at this stage, never mind past the end of the month.

“I would’ve thought and I’m sure Richie would’ve thought with the ability and character he’s got that clubs would have come in for him,” Dickov said.

“That’s not been the case.

“There would be nobody more happier than me come September 1 if Richie is in my squad.

“Until that time comes or something is sorted out in the meantime, there’s not a lot I can do about it.

“It’s 50-50 at this stage whether he will go or not.”

Prior to heading down the A1 for today’s trip to winless Colchester United, Rovers ended the saga surrounding the other player holding a relegation release clause as Quinn’s contract was cancelled by mutual consent.
