Paul Dickov is attempting to lure Richie Wellens back to Doncaster Rovers.

Wellens is poised to leave Leicester City this summer after an injury plagued last 12 months and, according to reports, has been instructed to find a new club.

He left Rovers to join the Foxes in 2009 and still has another year to run on his contract.

But sources in the East Midlands claim Wellens is not in manager Nigel Pearson’s plans and could be released on a free transfer this summer.

Wellens’ relationship with Pearson is thought to have deteriorated towards the end of last season because of the distance he is travelling to training.

Pearson, who has been told to slash his wage bill, is thought to want his players to live within a one-hour commute of the training ground.

Dickov is understood to have already sounded out Wellens about the prospect of a move to Doncaster.

And a Rovers return is likely to appeal to the former Manchester United trainee after he made just four appearances for Leicester last season.

He was farmed out on a month’s loan to Ipswich Town before Christmas to aid his rehabilitation from a cruciate knee ligament injury but a cartilage problem upon his return to Leicester pushed him further down the pecking order.

Wellens signed a lucrative contract extension in 2011 after initially impressing following his switch from the Keepmoat Stadium, and would need to agree to a significant wage cut at Rovers.

Doncaster could also face competition for their former midfield general. But Dickov is not wasting any time in his bid to persuade Wellens to return to South Yorkshire.

He sees him as an ideal partner for Dean Furman, who is almost certain to remain at Rovers, and is well aware of the qualities that made Wellens a fans’ favourite at the Keepmoat.

Dickov wants to strengthen the spine of his team and Wellens’ guile, experience and leadership qualities make him an attractive proposition.
