Paul Dickov hopes to avoid a repeat of the previous two summers by tying down the majority of his squad on contracts before pre-season.
Dean Furman, Nathan Tyson, Kyle Bennett, Theo Robinson, Reece Wabara and Rob Jones are among a big group of players whose current deals expire this summer.
Dickov, whose last two pre-seasons were disrupted by takeover politics, said: “Over the coming weeks we’ll be sitting down with all the players who are out of contract.
“We’ve seen over the last two summers [the effect it can have], with the disruptions that we’ve had and not having people tied down.
“We had a meeting with the board the week before last about the recruitment side of the club and getting players tied down.
“They’re fully behind what I want to do and they want me to try and get a squad together.
“We want to try and get as many players signed before pre-season starts and make sure the base of the squad is there, which we’ve not had before.”
Asked if he was in a position to offer new deals now, Dickov replied: “Yes and no. It causes its own problems being sixth sometimes, because you don’t know what league you’ll be in.
“I know the players I want to keep next season, regardless of what league we’re going to be in.”
Harry Forrester is expected to return to the squad at Port Vale today but James Coppinger (ankle) remains sidelined.
