Doncaster Rovers Belles set for basement battle

A SEASON of hard work comes down to a nervous and tense final day shoot-out for Doncaster Rovers Belles today.

There might not be any relegation from the FA Women’s Super League - at least until next season.

But professional pride dictates that John Buckley and his girls are desperate not to finish bottom of the elite division.

Belles must avoid defeat at bottom club Liverpool (2pm) to avoid finishing with the wooden spoon.

The Reds are three points behind Belles and their goal difference is currently -18, compared to Doncaster’s -16.

But any sort of victory for Liverpool would see those goal differences tilt in the Merseysiders’ favour - and they could yet finish above the Belles by virtue of the fact they have scored more goals.

Buckley’s side were impressive in defeat against newly-crowned Super League champions Arsenal on Sunday, going down 3-2 at Boreham Wood.

Aine O’Gorman and Leandra Little found the net for Belles but two own goals and a late Kelly Smith strike saw the Gunners prevail in an entertaining televised contest.

Buckley said: “We had a game plan and I think that the girls carried it out very well.

“We have now got to take the positives out of the performance moving in to the Liverpool game.

“I’m happy with how they played and their performance.

“But they’ve got to show that same sort of belief all the time.

“I’m not pleased we got beat, but I’m very pleased with the performance,” he added.

“We congratulate Arsenal on retaining the WSL title, they are worthy winners.”
