Dickov: Let’s hit the ground running!

Doncaster Rovers must make a strong start if they are to push for a top six finish this season, according to boss Paul Dickov.

Rovers make their return to competitive action this weekend when they host newly-promoted Bury in their League One opener.

And Dickov is desperate for his side to hit the ground running and add weight to his belief they are capable of pushing for promotion this season.

“I feel we’ve got a squad that can be really competitive and push top six,” he said.

“But the players need to realise that as well.

“We’ve got a group who know how to get in there and stay in there.

“But it’s imperative that we get a good start to the season and give ourselves a chance as well.”

Dickov is expecting a tough opening day test from David Flitcroft’s Shakers who have made major additions this summer.

Strikers Leon Clarke and Tom Pope - a target of Dickov’s - have signed up and Bury look set to join another competitive fight for the top six.

The Rovers boss believes League One will be as closely-contested as it was last term.

Dickov said: “It’s going to be a tough, tough league. It’ll be a tight league again.

“It’s about the little things like when we’re in games, we need to stay in games this year.

“A big mantra for us is if we can’t win the game, we don’t lose it.

“We’ve learned we will have to be at our best in every game, especially against good teams.”

Dickov insists he is content with the squad with which he is heading into the new season after making six additions during the closed season.

Andy Williams, Thorsten Stuckmann, Dany N’Guessan, Richard Chaplow, Aaron Taylor-Sinclair and Gary MacKenzie have all arrived, while Dickov is pleased with the progress of the club’s young crop during the summer.

He said: “I’m happy with the squad I’ve got at the minute.

“If someone becomes available and is someone we think will improve us, we might be able to do something.

“But I’ve said throughout I won’t stand in the way of the young lads who I think will be very important for us.”
