The Cobblers lost Shaun McWilliams to a red card for a foul on Andy Butler after 18 minutes and Rovers took full control, eventually running out 2-0 winners courtesy of goals from Tyreece John-Jules and Joe Wright.

Moore felt McWilliams’ dismissal changed the game but was pleased with the manner in which Rovers kept control.

“It was massive, especially on Northampton who were working on a system to stop us,” he said.

“To go a man down and play against a team that likes to dominant possession of the ball, it was going to be a difficult afternoon for them.

“And when we got our noses in front, it was always going to bring them out and leave spaces for us to operate in.

“It turned out to be that way even though the second goal came later on.

“I was more pleased with the solid showing from the players and the professionalism of them not getting caught up in a difficult game.

“I thought the players were solid today.

“The minimal bit of time we had to work with them during the week, they did the jobs what we wanted them to do in what we knew was going to be a difficult game.

“I’m really pleased with the three points.”

Moore felt the red card was the right call with McWilliams adudged to have been reckless in his lunging challenge..

He said: “Nowadays, if the referee deems it to be a foul then the player risks the red card and it was that really.

“Studs were showing, Butts came through and made contact on the ball.

“I think it was the right decision.”

The comfort with which Rovers saw out the game allowed Moore to make four substitutions and hand his players some respite after an intense week.

He said: “We knew it was going to be a difficult one which is why I tried to rotate the pack as much a I could to maintain one or two and I’m really pleased to have come out of a third game in six days unscathed.

“I’ll give them a bit of time off now to rest more than anything.”
