Rovers have bolstered their squad on the eve of the new season with the arrival of former midfielder Richie Wellens.

Wellens, 33, has agreed a short term contract at the Keepmoat Stadium following his release from Leicester City earlier this summer.

The agreement ends Paul Dickov’s summer-long pursuit of Wellens - first reported in the Free Press - but perhaps not in the way that Rovers’ boss had initially hoped.

A longer term deal was in the pipeline for Wellens had this summer’s much publicised takeover of the club gone through.

But with those talks on hold Rovers have moved to tie the former Oldham and Blackpool midfield general to a temporary deal - with several other interested clubs lurking in the background.

The deal suits both parties. Rovers add another much-needed body to their small squad, while Wellens effectively gets a shop window, should a longer term agreement with Doncaster prove to be out of the question.

Wellens could go straight into the side, alongside Dean Furman, for tomorrow’s Championship opener against his former club Blackpool.
