Ben Whiteman on the financial pressures of FA Cup progress for Doncaster Rovers

Like many clubs, Rovers have been hit hard by the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on revenues and the continued lockout of supporters.

The playing squad themselves opted to help offset the impact by agreeing to defer a percentage of their wages until fans are able to return to stadiums but options for income for the club have been limited since March.

Rovers received around £50,000 in both prize money and live TV broadcast fees for winning their first round tie against FC United of Manchester.

With today’s clash at Carlisle selected for digital broadcast coverage, both clubs will receive £12,500. The winner of the tie will add £25,500 to their prize fund while the losing team will take away £8,500.

Progression to the third round brings the possibility of more lucrative ties which could significantly aid the club.

Whiteman says such matters cannot concern players beyond their usual desire to win any match they feature in.

“It’s been a strange year overall, throughout football,” he said.

“Financially I think every lower league team will be struggling at the minute.

“I wouldn’t say there was any real added pressure. We don’t see that as football.

“We’re obviously on a deferral until the fans come back but I wouldn’t say there was any financial pressure.

“I think it’s just as professionals you want to get through as far as you can and hopefully draw a big club in the next round.”
