Barnsley boss Danny Wilson is hopeful of signing some more new players before the new season kicks off.
Wilson has so far recruited three new players to his squad, but having seen a string of players leave Oakwell during the summer, recruitment is still very much high on his agenda.
“Hopefully there will be some new signings to come in,” said Wilson. “But the nucleus of the team is good and I’m sure there’s going to be a few surprises from some players.
“We’re hoping for that little diamond to come through and prove themselves.”
The Reds returned to pre-season training on Monday and will work hard over the next fortnight before a training camp in Italy in readiness for League One.
Wilson has been impressed with what he’s seen and added: “The fitness levels of the players are very good, we’ve had some very strenuous testing.
“It’s been very intense, but everyone has come through it very well.
“There’s still areas where one or two people need to be topped up, but you expected that anyway.
“It’s a lot different that it used to be a few years ago. The players look after themselves and come back in good shape.
“Many years ago you could tell the lads who hadn’t looked after themselves because the plastic bags were on straight away. But now you don’t see much of that.
“The lads are definitely refreshed. We’ve got to put a lot of things behind us and we know there has to be a lot of changes.
“There have been a lot of changes to the squad already and it will take a bit of time for the new players to bed in, but it’s been an encouraging start.”
