Barnsley: Waiting game for Wilson as players ponder Reds offers

The waiting game goes on for Reds boss Danny Wilson with no incomings expected at Oakwell until later in the month.

Wilson has been making contact with targets including a list of back-up players should his first choice picks opt to move elsewhere.

And he is expecting plenty of competition for some of the players he has identified.

“I’ve got no doubt there some of the players we’ve looked at will have attracted interest from other clubs,” Wilson said.

“That is why it becomes a bit of a waiting game.

“The players have to make the decision to come to us or go to another club.

“They bide their time and see what opportunities are open to them.

“If they decide to go elsewhere you have to start the process again with a Plan B player.

“You have to stay strong at this time of the year.

“It’s about being patient but you have to be brave when you’re trying to get someone in.

“You can’t get too disappointed if some of the targets don’t sign.

“Other players have to be in mind if that happens so you can quickly move on.

“It’s a slower process at this level.

“You haven’t got millions of pounds to go and get the exact player you want.

“Every club at the level will probably be frustrated that things are not happening as quickly as they’d like but we’re all in the same boat.”

The Reds will certainly be without the services of midfielder Stephen Dawson next season after it was confirmed last week that the 28-year-old had rejected the offer of a new deal.

A number of Championship clubs are said to be interested in Dawson who made 40 appearances for Barnsley last season.

Wilson is also waiting for answers from Tomasz Cywka, Jacob Mellis and Jim O’Brien who have all been offered new deals.
