New boy Stevie Mallan will shine at Barnsley, according to St Mirren boss Jack Ross.

The Reds nabbed the promising youngster from the Scottish Championship club last week in a three-year deal.

A fee of around £300,000 is believed to have been agreed between the two sides.

The Scotland U21 international kept the Buddies up with six goals in his last nine games at the club.

And Ross said: “He has a natural ability and can find moments of quality in the final third.

“That in itself is a great asset to have, there are not that many players who can find that composure and quality in the final third.

“The goals he has scored and the number of assists he has provided are testament to that.

“That is a great starting point to have and if he can adapt to the different challenge of playing in that league he can go and progress again.”

Reds’ head coach Paul Heckingbottom was delighted to finally bring the talented 21-year-old to Oakwell, after a potential deal fell through back in January.

Reds’ skipper Marc Roberts continues to be linked with a move to Aston Villa, where he would follow in the footsteps of Hourihane and James Bree - who moved to Villa Park from Oakwell in January.

Steve Bruce is reportedly readying a £5million bid for the Barnsley player of the season, and captain, but the former Premier League club would have to sell in order to buy due to Financial Fair Play restrictions.

Louis Wardle became the second Reds’ academy graduate in as many days as he joined Louis Rowe in signing his first professional contract.
