Reds youngster George Maris is delighted to have signed a new one-year contract extension with the club.

The Reds’ former Academy graduate has penned a deal until the summer of 2016 having impressed boss Lee Johnson.

Maris, 19, is one of only two players who were offered contracts to stay at Oakwell with a summer clearout having already started at the League One club.

“It feels good,” said Maris. “It’s what I’ve always wanted to do and to get another year’s fantastic.

“Playing at Nuneaton [Borough, earlier in the season] helped, so I wasn’t as nervous on my debut. I was used to some first-team football.

“He [Lee Johnson] just said before the few games that he’d try me out.

“He said I’d done well at Nuneaton and had done well in training and deserved a chance.”

Midfielder Maris made his full debut for the Reds in their last game of the season, an impressive 5-0 home win over Rochdale.

Defender Lewin Nyatanga is the only other player to have been offered a new deal at Oakwell.

The Star understands the experienced centre-back has been offered a new two-year deal, with the option of a third year if all parties can agree on the terms of the new contract.

But there is seemingly no future at the club for midfielder James Bailey or forward Milan Lalkovic.

Both players have been transfer-listed and are expected to leave the club this summer.

And Reds chief executive Mansford believes the club have made the right decision to transfer-list both players.

“They’re both talented footballers, but they’ve both been told to find fresh opportunities,” said Mansford

“Lee Johnson has decided they’re not going to play as much football as they’d like, so we’ve tried to be fair to them.”

Barnsley will host an England U21 international at Oakwell on June 11 with Belarus the opposition.

And that could mean the return of one of the Reds’ fans favourite former players.

Ex-Academy graduate John Stones blossomed at the club and was rewarded by signing for Everton and then more recently recognition in the England senior squad.

England play Belarus at Oakwell on 11 June, 7.45pm kick-off in a friendly fixture.
