Reds boss Lee Johnson has told The Star he is working hard to sign new players ahead of next season.
And on Tuesday, Johnson will meet with the club’s board to discuss what new players he has in mind to help mount a concerted promotion push next term.
Johnson will also finalise a player retain list with the board, with centre-back Lewin Nyatanga rumoured to be the ONLY player set to be offered a new contract at Oakwell and seven other players expected to leave.
Club captain Martin Cranie is expected to leave this summer after his contract expires following this weekend’s game against Rochdale.
But Johnson is confident he can attract the right brand of player that will help bring success back to the club.
“We’re working hard to try and get players in, but at this stage of the season we’ve just got be patient,” Johnson told The Star. “We’ve got the basis of a very good squad here, but we do need to add to it. That’s just the natural evolution of football.
“It would be wrong of me to comment on the retain list at this stage, but it’s no secret we need improving.
“It’s an exciting time for the club and a fresh start for everyone.
“I really do believe in the players and the staff at the club. There’s a real optimism from everyone that we can be successful next season.”
And Johnson revealed he wants to build a team that the Barnsley supporters can really be proud of next season.
“I want a team that can give the Barnsley fans what they want,” admitted Johnson. “I want to be liked and I want the fans to buy into what we’re trying to do.
“They want a team they can respect and understand. They want to see character and we’d like to deliver that.”
The Reds hosts Dale this Sunday looking to finished the season on a high.
After an impressive nine-game unbeaten run, Johnson’s charges have not won in their last nine outings. “I want us to finish on a high, a top ten finish would be a good achievement,” he said.
