Dannny Wilson knows he will have to outwit a “wise old fox” if his Barnsley side are to beat Crawley tomorrow.

The Reds host Town at Oakwell looking to kick off their first season back in League One with a bang. And Wilson knows his new-look squad will be given a “stern” test by Town, now managed by the experienced John Gregory.

“He’s a wise old fox and he’ll know what we’re about, so it’s going to be a good challenge for us to see if we can start the season the right way,” Wilson told The Star. The Reds failed to win any of their six pre-season fixtures, but Wilson has been happy with the progress his side have made so far in terms of hard work and preparation.

“I’d have loved for us to win some games in pre-season, but we were tested on every level in pre-season,” stressed Wilson.

“It was very well thought out the opposition we played in every game, but the important result is Saturday. It’s about starting the season well.”

Striker Kane Hemmings, who joined from Cowdenbeath this summer, is unlikely to feature this weekend because of an ankle injury.

Yet Wilson has revealed he would “not be scared of throwing him in” despite a lack of competitive action.

Youngster Danny Rose and former Scunthorpe hitman Sam Winnall are tipped to be the Reds’ opening day attacking partnership, while midfielder James Bailey and Ross Turnbull have both recovered from minor injuries and are available for the 3pm kick off at Oakwell.
