Paul Heckingbottom is delighted Barnsley moved quickly to secure Stevie Mallan from St Mirren.

The Scottish creative midfielder was the first player through the door as the club undergo a summer of rebuilding.

Many of the Reds’ stars in recent seasons have moved on and the Oakwell hierarchy have a tough job on their hands to get the volume of players they need before the new season starts.

“I said from the start that we wanted to get our business done early,” admitted head coach Heckingbottom.

“I am really pleased that the club has moved quickly and made this deal happen.

“We’ve just finished a strong season back in the Championship and we are looking to build on this now, which I think helped Stevie in his decision to join us.”

Mallan is rated as one of the hottest prospects north of the border and the Reds could prove to have secured a bargain.

It is believed they paid in the region of £300,000 for his services and, at the age of 21, the player has bags of potential.

The Scot, who scored six goals in his last nine outings to keep the Buddies in the Scottish Championship, will add a goal threat from midfield and he fits the mould Heckingbottom looks for in his signings perfectly.

And Heckingbottom believes the Reds’ faithful will be excited to see their newest acquisition in action.

He added: “He’s a young, stylish midfielder who loves to pop up and get a goal so I think the fans will be excited to watch him.

“I am really pleased that Stevie can see his future at Oakwell. He has had some real admirers looking at him who we have managed to fight off and bring him here.

“He has really bought into what we want to do here and has seen the rise that the club has been on recently, so as soon as the opportunity came, he has jumped at it.”
